Bedroom ideas and what we should be guided by for the new school year.
Basic factors to consider when you plan a kid’s bedroom
There are several factors to consider to create a comfortable and personalized space. Here are some guiding principles to help you make the most of a Kid’s bedroom design:
1. Functionality:
Whether the room is large or small we have many options when it comes to solutions.
Let’s analyze our needs for this room. Do you have space for all the furniture? Or maybe we need to think about bespoke fitting joinery? Is it a playroom or bedroom? Is there enough space for a resting area, or we can for example use a bunk solution? What are the needs for our kids toys and clothes? How big should the desk be? What are the interests and favourite activities of the owner of the room?
When you have all the answers to these questions you can go to the next step. Figuring out how to set it all up!
2. Layout:
Visualization of the bunk bed project. We can create a visualization of each project or interior design depending on our client’s needs. | Photo of a bunk bed. Each bed has a lamp and hidden cabinets on the headrests. Siblings sharing a room – not easy but still possible. Particularly with good planning. |
Plan the layout carefully, considering the placement of furniture, windows, doors, and built-in storage.
Ensure a logical flow and maximize available space. Do you have to use a bunk bed? That’s okay, this is the moment when we can plan that. Do you have space in places where no one can stand? ( for example under the stairs ). There we can plan for storage or a closet. Or maybe the kid always wanted to have a special wooden “house” in their room but in the meantime, you have to find space for storage. These are challenges that bespoke furniture solves. Not enough space for all your desired ideas – this is the main reason for choosing bespoke furniture for the Kids’ room.
3. Colour Scheme and Wall Art:

Choose a colour palette that will encourage your children to learn or just create a fun space.
Soft, muted colours like pastels and neutrals create a soothing atmosphere, while bolder colours can add personality. Colours and patterns are aspects you can play with in a child’s room. Funky wallpaper, posters or maybe specially designed fantasy graphics will keep the bedroom warm and cosy.
4. Lighting:
Lighting is crucial for setting the mood. Incorporate a combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting to provide adequate illumination and create a cosy ambience.
Children’s rooms have a lot of functions. So we need a few different lights as well.
Night lamps – something that will help kids who prefer not to stay in full darkness.
Lights near the bed can be used by your kid when reading a book or when they’re scared of darkness. The light switch should be easily accessible and reachable by them. You can see highlighted in the picture, a dimmer switch that is close to the bed. Allowing the lights to be easily dimmed. On the photo we see the room of a two year old Max.
Relaxing light – Light that creates a dreamy atmosphere and a comfy nook.
LED shelve lighting – with a correctly chosen profile and light tone you can curate really warm and cosy environment to your room.
What about the workspace light in the space where your kid will be do their homework or creative project? Whichever space it may be, correct lighting is a key. Decide whether you would prefer something simple like a desk lamp or bespoke like lights mounted inside the furniture or on the wall.
Bespoke furniture creating a special workspace – Lighting is a crucial element of a properly prepared working space. In this picture, the bottoms of the wall mounted shelves had a channel milled in order to install LED lights.
Main Light – The light from the ceiling. It can be a chandelier or a flush-mount ceiling fixture.
In this picture, you can see the amazing main light which is modern and very light. You can also see stairs, which were adapted to fit the available space by Grovewood Joinery. While the isolation, walls, floor, and balustrade in the attic above were completed by our subsidiary team Grovewood Construction. The attic does not have enough head room for an adult, but it’s a perfect space for kids.
Light in closets – It enables you to see exactly what you have in your wardrobe. Better-displayed clothing means a greater chance of using your entire wardrobe.
Lights in a wardrobe are highly useful. The best choice is an LED system. With a bespoke closet, you have many places to install them. Consider the type of LED light you would install and how they should be installed. Should the light sit straight or be angled to face backwards into the wardrobe or maybe forwards towards the person?
Without a doubt, a properly designed light fixture changes the atmosphere of a room. It gives it style and a touch of luxury.
5. Furniture Selection:
Select furniture that complements the room’s size and style. Opt for pieces that serve a purpose and avoid overcrowding. Custom or modular furniture can be a great solution for optimizing space.
If we talk about a child’s room, the only limitation is our imagination. We are sure that your child will appreciate your effort to create a fantasy space that makes their dreams come true. The place where their creativity can blossom. Little ones can hide their treasures and have fun navigating from their imaginary headquarters.
6. Storage Solutions:
A fairy-tale space for storage and play. | An excellent idea for a small space where you can find plenty of storage. |
Effective storage is essential to maintain a clutter-free environment. Consider built-in closets, under-bed storage, and wall-mounted shelves to organise belongings.
Plan everything that you have in your mind and put it on paper. It is good to have a place for all toys and accessories. Toddlers are more willing to clean up their toys when access is simple and all things have their own place. It is fun when cleaning and storage can become a game. An example could be a shelf for dolls in the shape of a doll house.
7. Texture and Fabrics:
A few ideas for playing with texture and fabrics. Here we have a relaxed space with plenty of textures. It’s a technique that avoids cluttering the space with unnecessary decorations.
Incorporate a variety of textures and fabrics to add depth and warmth to the room. Soft rugs, plush bedding, and curtains can enhance comfort and aesthetics.
8. Personal Touch:
Room features – custom handles with the name of the child. Something that informs every guest whose room it is.
Infuse the child’s personality into the decor of the room. Display artwork, photos, or items that hold sentimental value to create a sense of identity and connection.
9. Balanced Decor:
A big personality needs space to express itself – blackboard paint is a “hit”, especially when it comes to toddler interior ideas.
Maintain a sense of balance and harmony in the room’s decor. Mix and match patterns, textures, and colours thoughtfully to avoid overwhelming the space.
10. Natural Elements:
Plants warm up the image of rooms and improve the mood of people staying in them.
Incorporate natural elements like plants, wood, and stone to bring a touch of the outdoors inside. Those elements can promote tranquillity and well-being.
11. Privacy and Comfort:
Window shatters
Consider window treatments that provide privacy and light control. Also, don’t forget to invest in a comfortable mattress and quality bedding to ensure a good night’s sleep.
12. Technology Integration:
Brush plates – Behind the black brushes are internet, display and sound cables. While they’re not in use now, they allow for the installation of the child’s first Television, console of computer in the future. It’s a great way to save space, but also prepare the room to grow alongside your child.
Plan for technology integration, if desired. Designate areas for charging devices or mounting a TV, but avoid making technology the dominant feature.
13. Flexibility:
Design the room with adaptability in mind. Furniture that can be easily rearranged or repurposed allows for flexibility as your needs change over time.
14. Budget:
Set a realistic budget and prioritize your spending based on what matters most to you. Allocate resources to key elements that will make the most significant impact.
Incorporating those principles into your bedroom design will help you achieve a harmonious and inviting space.
Main elements when you plan a teenager’s bedroom
If you have a teenager at home, designing and planning their bedroom will borrow similar concepts to the process above. We just have to approach it a little bit differently. Don’t forget about:
1. Age-Appropriate Design:
Keep in mind the age and interests of your child. Younger children may prefer whimsical and colourful designs, while teenagers might prefer more mature and subdued decor.
2. Personal Expression:
Encourage your teenager to express their personality through decor.
Allow him to choose wall art, posters, or decorative items that reflect their interests and style. It’s a great way for him to have a sense of ownership and identity in their space.
3. Study and Workspace:
While teenagers may prefer working on their beds at times, it’s essential to provide a dedicated study area with a comfortable chair, a desk, and good lighting. This space can promote productivity and concentration.
4. Storage Solutions for Independence:
As teenagers start to become more independent, provide ample storage for their clothes, belongings, and personal items. Consider incorporating closet systems, shelves, and storage bins to help them stay organized.
5. Technology Hub:
Recognize the importance of technology in a teenager’s life. Create a designated area for charging devices, a computer or laptop setup, and cable management to keep the room tidy and tech-friendly.
6. Privacy and Personal Space:
Respect your teenager’s need for privacy and personal space. Ensure that their room feels like a sanctuary where they can unwind and have some alone time.
7. Collaborative Design:
Involve your teenager in the design process. Ask for their input and preferences to make sure the room reflects their tastes and needs. This collaborative approach can lead to a space that truly feels like their own.
